Our Health & Wellbeing Symposium has been deigned to enable us to consider and deliver 4 different workshops with topics that cover supervision, mindfulness, neuroscience and compassion – all of which contribute to to improving the way we look after ourselves and our clients.

The workshops sessions run both in the morning and the afternoon - all you have to do is choose which sessions are most appropriate for you.

Dr Magdalena Bak-Maier

The Association for Coaching is delighted to welcome Dr Magdalena Bak-Maier as the opening Keynote for our symposium.  

The hardest bit of work one will ever do with clients is to help them be more of who they really are.  The extent to which we can do this, grows with our ability to consciously feel ourselves in the process of becoming. At the juncture where heart, mind, body and spirit meet a curious miracle occurs: the constant unfolding of human potential.

Leo Rosten said "The purpose of life is not to be happy at all. It is to be useful, to be honourable. It is to be compassionate. It is to matter, to have it make some difference that you lived.”

In this keynote Magdalena will share her journey into integration and what she is learning about how we facilitate powerful and lasting shifts in others. One of the key messages she has found is that health and wellbeing are pivotal for returning us to the critical love of self and our magnanimous nature.  It is crucial, empowering us with hubris and humility and aiding us in becoming the most powerful coaching instruments we can be. Both goal and trigger for those who seek coaching, health and wellbeing leads us into profound love of life and learning that stands to transform our lives and that of those we touch. 

About Dr Magdalena Bak-Maier:
 
Magdalena Bak-Maier advances the idea that the nervous system is our greatest helper.  She has a gift for teaching people how to tap it for wellbeing and success by reconnecting emotions and aspirations. 

A trained neuroscientist (PhD, Caltech USA), successful coach with a Physician of the Soul label she attracted from clients, and dedicated educator, Magdalena is an internationally recognised thought leader in the area of human empowerment. Workshop 1

How is supervision good for your wellbeing?
Speaker: Michelle Lucas

It’s a well-trodden phrase that we need to have “good energy” in order to do our best work with clients.  Most of us will already have mechanisms for managing our own self-care.  Whether this is mindfulness, healthy eating or managing the intensity of our coaching portfolio.  This interactive session encourages you to consider how supervision could add to your mix.  We will explore the notion of “coach as instrument” which reminds us that regardless of how many tools we have in our coaching tool box – it is how we show up with our client that makes the biggest impact.

We will take a deep dive into the restorative components of supervision and through a supervisee case study consider how you could use supervision specifically with your well-being in mind.

By the end of the session we hope you will have a broader sense of how you can use supervision to keep you in good shape for you, and which, by the way,  will benefit your clients too!

This workshop will:

  • explore what is meant by “Coach as instrument”
  • take a look at how our client’s energy can impact on ours
  • look at how our 'poor energy' might show up in a coaching session
  • discuss what might get in the way of you being a healthy coach
  • show how supervision can help you stay 'healthy' as a professional coach.

By the end of the workshop you will have an understanding of:

  • how the restorative element of coaching supervision works
  • how you can use restorative supervision to enhance your own well-being.

About Michelle Lucas:

Michelle's first interest was psychology and this quickly led to a career in HR, spanning over 20 years. It was this HR work that drew her to coaching, having spent much of her time supporting executives that were dealing with transition.

Trained at Oxford Brookes in both Coaching and Coaching Supervision she is an Accredited Master Executive Coach and an Accredited Coach Supervisor. She works as an Executive Coach and also supervises those that work in similar fields, including MA students at Oxford Brookes studying Coaching & Mentoring. She is an active volunteer for the AC working as their Supervision Education Lead she also supports the EMCC and is part of the Editorial Review Panel for their journal. She has written a number of articles for academic journals publishing the results of her Group Supervision research. She is a frequent speaker at the International Supervision Conference regarding her research, her involvement in a supervision chain, her thinking about what constitutes a “supervision mindset” and what happens when supervision is deliberately coach-centred.  In 2016 she collaborated with David Clutterbuck and Carol Whitaker to co-author Coaching Supervision: A practical guide for supervisees, published by Routledge.  She is now writing her 2nd book collaborating this time with Tammy Turner and Carol Whitaker. This book considers how to make peer supervision robust it will be published by Routledge in Spring 2018. 


Workshop 2
The Integration of Mindfulness - with integrity & safety
Speaker: Dorothy Larios

Working with the demands of a Mental Health crisis is the platform for the work of many of today’s coaches. Bringing this to the foreground is often not spoken about and may be dealt with in differing ways by coaches and their supervisors.

Following on from her article about the Integration of Mindfulness into Coaching, Dorothy invites you to step into this thought provoking workshop.
As a Coach known for supporting those with Health and Well-being issues, Dorothy brings a Case Study for you as the Coach to contemplate.
What arises for you may be of interest, provoke insights or raise questions.

  • mental Health issues can be contained in Coaching
  • mindful practice forms a safe platform for integration into your whole way of being

About Dorothy Larios:

A long-time member and supporter of the Association of Coaching, Dorothy is an Accredited Professional Executive Coach, Assessor and Coaching Supervisor. With a history of living in a foreign country, bringing up cross-cultural children, one with Special Educational Needs and then resettling in the UK as a business women, Dorothy has developed huge empathy and a deep understanding of the associated mental, physical and emotional challenges that arise for individuals and families. Trials and traumas are rich in learning, however living consciously now sustains us more than ever in our society.

Dorothy teaches Mindfulness and continues training through Bangor University, Centre for Mindfulness Research and Development. Other collaborations for training and development have been the NHS Sussex Partnership Trust, Mindfulness Centre, and the Mindfulness Association. Dorothy is an approved Mindfulness in Schools Foundation teacher for the. b Programme.

Dorothy, a Scot, returned from living in Greece in 2000 and has created a diverse portfolio of coaching work; Executive Coaching, Retreat Coaching, Health and Wellbeing and now Mindfulness Teaching.

In the 2002 she had the privilege of attending a Coaching Conference in Sitges, Spain where Master Coach, Hannah Wilder ran a workshop on Mindfulness. Ever since that day she has been a mindfulness practitioner and now supervises and coaches with mindfulness as a major foundation stone to her work.  She is viewed as a practical practitioner and aims to share her coaching experience through case studies and engaging the audience in deeper self reflections.

Dorothy has contributed to Health Coaching with her articles for the Health Service Journal 2008, RH Magazine 2011-2012, Association for Coaching Bulletin and AC's Global Coaching Perspectives online magazine in July 2016.


Workshop 3
Healthy coaching: Insights from neuroscience
Speaker: Deni Lyall

As an experienced coach, Deni is passionate about facilitating the change that the coachee wishes to make and she has become increasingly interested in how that might consistently happen. This curiosity led her to learn more about neuroscience and how the advances in neuroscience are giving exciting insights into the activity within the brain: Some of which confirms long held ideas and understanding of how it works, and some of which challenges us to think about new ways of working. Although neuroscience is a diverse and fragmented field, Deni is discovering how it can inform her coaching practice. 

Judith Glaser talks about the healthy and unhealthy ‘cocktails’ within our heads and Deni feels that is an important concept. She believes that by taking into account the way our brains work, we can ensure that we practice healthy coaching for both ourselves and our coachees.

However, as Dr Shohamy mentioned, people can have a tendency to take a neuroscience finding and get carried away with its possibilities. So at the beginning of this session we will look at some of the realities of neuroscience and also some examples of how the brain, whilst awesome, is not perfect. 
This will be followed by two interactive topics where, after some neuroscience input, we will discuss how this might inform your coaching practice both inside and outside of the coaching session. It promises to be an interesting workshop due to the wealth of knowledge and experience everyone will bring to the conversations.

During the session we will discuss:

  • neuroscience: the reality and tales of caution
  • examples of how the brain is awesome but not perfect
  • through the lens of neuroscience; how we affect our own healthy coaching; creating greater generosity towards our coachees.

By the end of this session you will have some thoughts and ideas about what you might do more of, or differently, to maintain healthy coaching for you and your coachee.

About Deni Lyall:

Deni has been practising as an executive coach and management development trainer for over 20 years. She has in-depth knowledge of, and a wealth of experience in, managing and working with people. Deni has a pragmatic approach to coaching and development as enabling people to make a real difference is important to her. As a chartered engineer, she spent the first half of her career working in a variety of operational line management roles.

In 2016 she embarked on a Doctorate in Professional Studies (Sustained change through coaching). She is researching the possible neurobiological mechanism that determines what we do, moment by moment, and the implications for coaching.

Deni is also a coaching trainer and Association for Coaching Coaching Assessor. She has also been a supervisor, trained young people in coaching on a voluntary basis and mentors fledgling coaches as they start their coaching journey.

As well as having useful conversations, she is currently publishing her book, "A Field Guide for Line Managers: Bringing out the best in people.", which contains fifty-two ‘how to’ topics for line managers to develop and practically apply to themselves and their teams. Look out for it in 2018.

Coaching with Compassion

The topic of compassion has been growing for some time as part of a general shift towards helping clients with wellbeing and related areas such as Mindfulness, Resilience and Happiness.

Advances in neuroscience show we are “hard wired” as humans for compassion.

However, with increasing complexity and strife within the corporate arena and the world at large, our ability to be compassionate is more important than ever but sometimes harder than ever to find.

Anecdotally coaches report more pain, grief and suffering showing up in coaching and maybe this is because managers in particular feel more comfortable employing a coach rather than having therapy.

Compassion is not all pink and fluffy. It’s not just about kindness. Compassion is about the courage “to descend into the reality of human existence”. Unfortunately, for many managers, the more power you have the less empathetic you can become to those subordinate to you.

On that basis, all coaches, whether working inside or outside of the corporate world, need greater skill to help clients connect with their own compassion to lead happier and more productive lives. The challenge for coaches is how we connect with our own self compassion in order to model the way with our clients. As Paul Gilbert (2008) says “If your compassion does not involve yourself then it is incomplete”.

During this session you will learn:

  • why humans are built for compassion
  • why it’s so hard to be self-compassionate (for coaches and clients)
  • why too much empathy and the desire to help can cause problems for coaches
  • compassion and the corporate world - why it makes good business sense.

By the End of the Session you will:

  • know the three requirements for compassion
  • have examined 3 helpful questions on compassion to develop your coaching capability
  • have learned some techniques for generating Compassion in coaching clients

We will share our learning on what hinders our compassion towards clients and how to find the space and courage to help them, as well as ourselves.

About Julia Menaul:

Julia Menaul has been running her own practice, Spark Coaching and Training, since 2001. Julia is an AC Accredited Professional Executive Coach (Association for Coaching), Member of the British Psychological Society and Regional Organiser in North West England for the Association of Coaching Supervisors.

She coaches senior and middle managers and their teams across all sectors, as befits her eclectic background after working in a number of industries over the past 25 years. She also runs coach skills training for managers and leaders.

Her latest e-book published by Book Boon is “Compassionate Coaching in the Corporate World”.

Julia’s psychology degree and interest in behavioural change led to her discovering her passion for people development. A Chartered Fellow of the CIPD, she was Training and Development Manager within areas as diverse as retail, charity, electronics and the criminal justice system. 

Coach supervising since 2006 and supervising Supervisors since 2010, Julia is one of the few supervisors to have coaching supervision qualifications from the two leading providers in the UK. She supervises many independent coaches (1 -1 and group supervision), as well as internal coaches in larger organisations such as the NHS and the Prison Service.

Rhythm and Ritual
Erica Sosna

The natural world follows a rhythm. The seasons turn and we experience the transition and transformation that each one brings. Our lives too, are shaped by different seasons. Yet society has lost many of the traditions and rituals that mark these changes. 

Thomas Moore, in his book Care of the Soul, describes the absence of ritual in modern life as the source of many psychological ailments including depression, stress and burnout. 

In this talk, Erica Sosna, storyteller and career transition specialist, shares how the rhythm of life can provide structure and insight to our clients.  She will share insight on how to deepen the impact of our work through ritual and honouring this natural rhythm. Together we will explore how to harness the power of ritual to reignite the flame of wellness in our clients, restore their personal confidence and mark organisational endings and new beginnings.
