Setting the Brain to work in Coaching

20th century psychology created no agreements or shared professional understandings about human behaviour. There were lots of theories, but no common conclusions.

In beginning to understand how the brain works, the new brain sciences of the 21st century are offering completely new ways of thinking about human behaviour.

Like the rest of the known universe, human beings are essentially energy systems, not psychological systems. From this perspective, coaching is about how to get energy flowing and understanding how and why that happens.

This perspective has profound implications for the practice of coaching and organisational consulting because it directs attention to aspects of individual and corporate endeavour that have not previously had a scientific frame of reference attached to them.

This webinar series offers an introduction to this new knowledge and how it can be used. Participants will gain a sense that, despite its complexity, the brain is wonderfully simple because of the principles upon which it works. Those joining us will see how they can bring such knowledge into strengthening their own coaching practice.

  1. Enough about the brain to start using the knowledge professionally.
  2. Enough about the brain as a foundation for going on learning.
  3. How to approach coaching from a brain-based point of view.

Webinar 1: How the brain works

Including its profound links to heart and gut too. This first session needs no scientific background to make friends with the brain, though the information is deeply rooted in the modern brain sciences. We will do a deep dive into the workings of the brain and understand how this can be used in coaching.


Webinar 2: Understanding the coach’s brain

In the second webinar, we will do an exploration of what is happening in the brain that the coach is using all the time – the only one s/he has. Coaches will become more aware of their own brain and understand how to set this up in order to be most helpful to their clients.


Webinar 3: Whose brain is in charge? Understanding the client’s brain

In the third webinar, we will explore how does the coach make sure s/he is creating the conditions for maximal coaching effectiveness? This session focuses on the fact that a coaching contract is a contract for changing the client’s brain.

Recordings and slides will be made available for all registered participants

Preparation & Resources 

Participants are invited to bring their own brains to the webinars in an open frame of mind.

After each webinar, we will share the recording of the session as well as a slide deck of continuing value and key reading references.


Speaker Bio

Dr. Paul Brown is Professor of Organizational Behaviour, Monarch Business School Switzerland, having previously held the world’s first visiting professorship in organizational neuroscience in London. He has a long-standing professional advisory interest in how family businesses are handed on to the next generation and is developing a general theory of the individual and the organization.

A clinical and organisational psychologist and executive coach and supervisor, he has in recent time co-authored Neuropsychology for Coaches: understanding the basics (2012) McGraw-Hill/Open University Press; River Dragon (a novel, 2014); Neuroscience for Leadership: harnessing the brain gain advantage (2015) Palgrave Macmillan (which won a category Gold in the 2016 Chartered Management Institute’s ‘Management Book of the Year’ awards); and The Fear-Free Organization (2015) Kogan Page.    

Dr Brown lives in Laos, consulting world wide. He has created and teaches a world-first distance-learning Masters program in Applied Neuroscience in Organisations and a CPD programme The Science of the Art of Coaching. In Germany, he is attached to Eicke Leadership Academy.
