Ontological coaching is an approach that focuses more on the who than the what, more on the being of the coachee than their goals, for the sake of supporting clients in achieving sustainable transformation.
This series is aimed at experienced coaches (although new coaches are welcome) who want to explore a coaching methodology that goes beyond “tell me what you want, and I’ll help you get there”.
The guiding principle of ontological coaching is well summed up by James Flaherty who writes: “Each person’s actions were fully consistent with the interpretations he brought, an interpretation that will persist across time, across events, across circumstances. Our job as coaches will be to understand the client’s structure of interpretation, then in partnership alter this structure so that the actions that follow bring about the intended outcome.” (Flaherty 1999 p.9)
In this webinar series, we will be exploring the three core components of this structure of interpretation – language, body and emotions – and how to work with our clients to help them transform in each of those three domains.
We will also be looking at our own structures of being so that this series will be more than just an “academic” course, but rather a powerful learning experience that will profoundly enhance your capacities as a coach.
In this webinar series you will:
- The key distinctions of ontological coaching
- How to work with the whole self of the coachee
- How “who you are” shapes your capacity to coach
We will also consider key learning points such as... working with emotions and the body in coaching as well as the coach’s use of self in coaching.
Topics and schedule for the webinar series
**Live webinars will take place at:12:30pm BST on the above mentioned dates.
Webinar 1: What is Ontological Coaching?
In this first webinar, we will look at the basic distinctions of ontological coaching and its relevance and application.
Webinar 2: Language, Body, and Emotions
In the second webinar, we will be working more deeply with the three domains of the self, and reflecting together on how we are shaped by our interpretations and how to start challenging those interpretations in ourselves and others.
Webinar 3: Ontological Coaching in Action - How do we make ontological interventions?
In this webinar, we will be looking at how to make ontological interventions, and work with our coachees to help them develop new ways of being and create new transformative practices.
Webinar 4: Bringing it all together – the art of ontological coaching
We will conclude this programme with an interactive session, designed to tie all of the elements of the series together and to reflect on your practice of the material as well as answer any final questions.
All sessions will include a blend of teaching content, group discussions and the opportunity to share and reflect on your own experiences (with the possibility of live coaching where appropriate).
