ACT Based Coaching
Helping both you and your clients develop psychological flexibility, thrive and flourish
Many of our clients’ problems arise as a result of them getting stuck in their thinking, their avoidance of unwanted thoughts, feelings and sensations, their lack of clarity over what really matters, and some of the unhelpful beliefs they hold and the stories they tell themselves about themselves. This is known as psychological inflexibility.
Our clients quality of life, health, wellbeing, and performance may be significantly improved if we can help them develop, and apply, the skills of unhooking themselves from their thinking, allowing and accepting (not necessarily liking) their feelings and sensations, taking committed action in line with their values, whilst spending more time in the present moment with the ability to see their life from the perspective of the observing self (in contrast to their narrative self). This state is known as psychological flexibility.
This webinar series will provide you with an introduction and overview of how to help your clients – and yourself – cultivate and apply more psychological flexibility.
In this webinar series you will learn:
- The nature of psychological flexibility and how to cultivate it in yourself and others
- How to develop and strengthen the 6 skills of defusion, acceptance, presence, valuing, action and perspective taking
- How “ACT based coaching” can be used as a holistic, integrated way of coaching from the outset with a client, or how you can ‘dip into’ and share elements of the approach to help particular clients with specific issues, struggles or goals
- How “ACT based coaching” can help with health, wellbeing and performance improvement, resilience, emotional intelligence, self-actualisation, spiritual growth (for religious and non-religious alike) and flourishing
Topics and schedule for the webinar series
**Live webinars will take place at 13.00 GMT on the above-mentioned dates.
Webinar 1: Introduction to ACT based coaching
In this webinar, we will explore: What is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (or Training)? Where has it come from? What are the core assumptions, principles, and methods? What is the evidence of effectiveness (over 1,000 studies)? What makes it potentially the most powerful of coaching methodologies? How does one best get started?
Webinar 2: Developing and applying the skills of Defusion and Perspective Taking
In this webinar we will explore why are our thoughts are so sticky and how does this become a problem? We will explore metaphors and exercises to help ourselves and our clients defuse from unhelpful thinking patterns. We will also explore different ways of experiencing and thinking about the self, and metaphors and exercises to help ourselves and our clients cultivate the perspective of the transcendent, observing self.
Webinar 3: Developing and applying the skills of Acceptance and Presence
Many of our own and our clients’ health, wellbeing and performance problems are caused or made worse by experiential avoidance. In this webinar, we will explore metaphors and exercises to help ourselves and our clients increase our ability and willingness to accept unwanted thoughts, feelings, urges, and sensations whilst taking action in line with our values and goals. We will also explore helpful metaphors and exercises for bringing the mind back from its frequent time travels into the past and the future, helping us and our clients spend more time fully present, attending to the world as it is and not how our mind tells us it is.
Webinar 4: Developing and applying the skills of Values and Action
It’s all very well improving our thinking, feeling, presence and ‘selfing’ skills, but what if our lives are headed in the wrong direction? In this webinar, we explore metaphors and exercises to help us and our clients better clarify and live more fully in harmony with what really matters to us, so we can make better choices and more fully tap into our inner wisdom. We will also explore some of the science of behaviour change and habit formation so we can increase the likelihood that we can act effectively and persistently to take our own and our clients’ lives in a more purposeful, meaningful and rewarding direction.
Recordings and slides will be made available for all registered participants.
