Integrating Health into Coaching:  From Treatment to Recovery and Wellbeing

Health, wellbeing - both mental and physical - are foundational to our client’s lives.

Effective and successful coaching outcomes are built on the foundation of health. Without good or manageable health people struggle to perform, contribute and flourish.

When ill health comes, treatment and recovery is needed, and coaches can play a vital role in these experiences and transitions their clients are going through.

The webinar series is a complete ‘mini-course’ that can take participants to a place of increased confidence and clarity.

Coaches are in an ideal position to be incredibly useful to their clients and communities at this time.

We can:

  • Be Allies to our clients in ill-health prevention
  • Help with early warning signs of problematic behaviour and mental health issues
  • Use coaching approaches to not only build resilience but build ‘anti-fragility’ where our clients can become stronger and more useful as a result of their challenges

In this webinar series you will learn:

  • The 3 Zones approach to understanding where your clients’ health and wellbeing

  • How to permanently build mental and physical health foundations into your coaching practice

  • How to approach coaching with a client in the different health contexts of treatment, recovery and wellbeing

  • When to refer a client, bring in other resources, or end the coaching

  • What to say and do when confronted with mental or physical ill-health

  • Coaching tools that support coaching and health

We will also consider key learning points such as:

  • How to create referral relationships with appropriate practitioners

  • How to manage crises in clients' lives and the coaching relationship

  • Reframing the way we think about when and how we coach clients in recovery

Topics and schedule for the webinar series

**Live webinars will take place at 13.00 GMT

Webinar 1:  Principles, Approaches, Tools and Ethics

In this session, we will explore the landscape of wellbeing and the principles, models and tools that are useful when integrating health, wellbeing, recovery and treatment into a coaching practice. We will explore meaning-centered coaching as a primary resource for coaches. We will also identify a multi streams approach to the concepts of wellness and wellbeing. And finally, we will take a look at ethical considerations.

Webinar 2:  Coaching Treatment and Recovery

In this next session, we will focus on the specific context of coaching people when they are either in treatment, recovery or both. We will look at how the relationship with your client needs to be redesigned (or contracted) to achieve the most likely positive outcome. We will look at what to do if there are any setbacks (sometimes called “relapse”) and how to manage your own responses to the challenges your clients face.

Webinar 3:  Coaching Wellbeing

In our third session, we will focus on coaching wellness or wellbeing. We will see how this is different from recovery. We will explore how we manage the boundary between recovery and wellness. We will look at how we can deepen the wellbeing experience with our clients and link it with mastery and fulfilment. We will also see how we can coach clients to create their own wellness matrix that they can use to build their lives.

Webinar 4:  Integration, Coach Development, and Supervision

In the final webinar, we will recap and relink, bringing the key principles from the previous webinars together. We will then explore how these tools and principles can be used to develop the idea of the ‘well’ coach and how this can help us become more resilient and develop our own antifragility. We will also look at how to think about supervision within these frameworks. We will also touch on the importance of creativity in the process of wellbeing.

Recordings and slides will be made available for all registered participants.

Participants will be asked to prepare in the following way:

  • Recovery & Wellness Zone assessment checklist

  • A short video on the Recovery & Wellness Zone Assessment diagram

  • Online Quiz: Can you spot developing mental health issues in your clients?

  • Online Quiz: How confident are you coaching a client who needs a recovery or wellness plan?

  • Come to the webinars with at least one example from your coaching practice involving health issues (mental or physical) anonymously
