The AC Ireland Team invite you to join us to explore how the Irish Defense Forces has introduced a coaching and mentoring culture into the organization.

The session will take place in Cathal Brugha Barracks in Rathmines.Teas/ coffees will be provided on arrival which will be followed by a fireside-chat style conversation with Brigadier General Brendan McGuinness (Retd.) and Corporal Yvonne Kearney.

This event is kindly being hosted by Cathal Brugha Barracks. Given attendees will need to be escorted from the gate of the Barracks to the venue, on time arrival is essential.

The military is often imagined as the ultimate command‑and‑control environment - but today’s Defence Forces tell a very different story. Yvonne and Brendan’s role at the center of a major cultural evolution within Óglaigh na hÉireann (Irish Armed Forces): is an interesting story. It involves embedding coaching, mentoring, reflective practice and people‑centered leadership into an organisation where lives and mission success depend on trust, clarity, and empowered teams.

In this session, Yvonne and Brendan will share :

Corporal Yvonne Kearney:

Cpl Yvonne Kearney has over 29 years of service in the Irish Army. She has previously served in 1 Brigade Headquarters in a variety of staff functions, including operations and as the brigade legal clerk, while concurrently championing coaching and mentoring in the organisation for over a decade. She has deployed overseas on operations on several occasions, including tours to UNIFIL (Lebanon) and KFOR (Kosovo). She holds a BA (Hons) in Counselling and Psychotherapy, an MSc with First Class Honours from UCC in Personal, Business and Executive Coaching, an MA with First Class Honours in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education from SETU, a Postgraduate Diploma in Workplace Wellbeing from Trinity College Dublin, and Diplomas in Mentoring and Team coaching from Kingstown College, Dublin. Professional body memberships include the Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (MIACP), the British Psychological Society (BPS), the European Federation of Psychologists Association (EFPA), Senior Level Individual Practitioner (EIA) and Senior Level Programme Manager (IPMA) with the European Mentoring and Coaching Council Global (EMCC). Cpl Kearney currently serves in Strategic Human Resources Division, Defence Forces Headquarters, as the first ever Coaching and Mentoring Programme Manager.

Brigadier General Brendan McGuinness (Retd.):

Brendan McGuinness served in the Irish Army for over 40 years to March 2026. Currently he is working as a coach and mentor who supports people and businesses in raising self-awareness and development. Achieving clarity and moving individuals and teams towards potential within systems are key abilities. Other areas of interest and activity include maximizing effect and capacity from diverse workforces whether in office or online. He is an EMCC accredited coach at Senior Practioner level and holds an MSc in Executive Coaching from Smurfit Business School, UCD. He is also a graduate of the Military College with an MA in Management, Leadership, and Defence Studies from Maynooth University.

During his military career, he gathered experience when serving with the UN, EU, NATO PfP and, the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) in a wide range of military and non-military roles. Appointments included, General Officer Commanding the Defence Forces Training Centre, Commander of Joint Task Force and Director of Operations and Plans in Defence Forces Headquarters, School Commandant, Infantry School and Director of Infantry, Commandant Military College, Headquarters Support Group Commander, KFOR (Kosovo), Officer Commanding the 51st Infantry Group, UNIFIL (Lebanon) and Officer Commanding 7th Infantry Battalion and Cathal Brugha Barrack.
