Dare to Care: Coaching Across Racial Differences

Research suggests that globally, around 85% of executive coaches are white. While white people often speak as though they are outside the issue of race, black and brown people are frequently racially identified - whether by choice or not - and this can significantly shape lived experience. 

As coaches and supervisors, how willing are we to open up and explore these conversations within our work?

In this reflective and interactive webinar, Fenella Trevillion and Gwyn Thomas explore coaching and supervision across racial difference through the Dare to Care Compass - a practical framework illustrating the intersection of courage and care in coaching conversations. Together, they consider avoidance, fear, vulnerability, and the possibility of a deeper connection through greater daring.

Fenella Trevillion is an executive and career coach, supervisor, facilitator, and writer working predominantly within the public sector. Originally from South Africa and now based in Oxford, UK, her work is strongly influenced by racial, social, and climate justice values. Her practice integrates systemic and somatic approaches, including Gestalt, mindfulness, and NLP, to support reflective and courageous exploration within coaching relationships.

Gwyn Thomas, DL, FAC, is an experienced executive coach, leadership mentor, and ethical leader with more than 7,000 hours of coaching experience across public, private, charitable, and education sectors internationally. A Fellow of the Association for Coaching, Gwyn combines leadership expertise with deep coaching insight and brings both lived experience and professional perspective to conversations about racial difference in coaching and leadership practice.

Alongside her coaching and supervision practice, she is the founder of IW Press, a hybrid publishing company that supports writers in bringing meaningful books into the world. She works closely with authors throughout the entire process, from shaping initial ideas through to writing, editing, publication, and marketing.

Maria is the author of Coaching Presence: Building Consciousness and Awareness into Coaching Interventions, as well as the poetry collection This One Life and the spiritual memoir A Caged Mind. Her work sits at the intersection of reflection, creativity, and spirituality, with a focus on contributing to a more conscious and compassionate world.

About Coach Supervisor Knowledge Exchange Sessions

Coach Supervisor Knowledge exchange sessions provide an opportunity for a Coach Supervisor member to bring a topic of interest to discuss with participants in an informal setting. These sessions provide a rich platform to connect and share knowledge and learning relating to the topic brought to the group.

The format of the session may take the form of discussion groups or one main discussion in the plenary led by the guest host. Areas of knowledge exchange may include:

• Review of a book, webinar, podcast or topical theme
• Further exploration of recent research
• Discussion relating to models, approaches, current areas of interest

ADHD and Other Neurodivergent Reflective Practitioner Groups, for Coach Supervisors

These bi-monthly groups offer a focused reflective space for Coach Supervisors who want to deepen their understanding of ADHD and other neurodivergent presentations in coaching.

As supervision continues to evolve, many coaches are working with neurodivergent clients. This creates important opportunities and responsibilities for supervisors. These small, collaborative groups allow you to explore the practical, ethical and relational considerations that underpin effective neurodivergent affirming supervision.

Whether you are new to this area or developing existing expertise, this is a space to reflect on your supervisory practice, strengthen your confidence, and build your capability in supporting coaches working with neurodivergence.

Groups are intentionally small to encourage meaningful dialogue and shared learning.

Coaching Supervision in Practice

Live Coaching Demonstration with Yannick Jacob

Coaching supervision is increasingly recognised as an essential component of professional coaching practice. Yet many coaches have never had the opportunity to observe supervision in action and may be unsure what actually happens within a supervision conversation.

In this Live Coaching Demonstration (LCD), Yannick Jacob invites participants into the supervision room to observe a live supervision session with a real supervisee. Drawing on existential philosophy and positive psychology, Yannick demonstrates how supervision creates a reflective, relational, and ethically grounded space in which coaches can explore challenges, deepen their awareness, and develop their practice.

Following the demonstration, participants will have the opportunity to reflect on what they observed, explore the thinking behind the supervision process, and engage in discussion about the practical value supervision brings to coaching practice.

He teaches at the University of Cambridge and the International Centre for Coaching Supervision (ICCS), and designed the School of Positive Transformation's Accredited Certificate in Integrative Coaching, bringing together many of the coaching profession's most influential practitioners and pioneers.

Through Yannick's Coaching Lab, coaches can observe experienced practitioners working live with clients. Yannick is the author of An Introduction to Existential Coaching and has presented internationally on coaching, supervision, and professional development. Since then, he's now focused on creating authentic, coherent and confident leaders in his coaching so we can solve important problems. Philip has coached leaders globally for Citi for over 10 years, managed global leadership programs and since 2022 has been running his own leadership development company.

In the pursuit of sustainable leadership performance, Philip explored the world of physiology & nervous system regulation measured through heart-rate variability (HRV). Combining this with inner leadership development led to increased energy, authenticity, progression to larger roles, resilience, emotional management and the ability to solve larger and more complex problems for his clients.

Philip is deeply passionate about the coaching industry and honoured to be on the infinite journey of developing as a human and coach and walking with others as they do the same.

Our AMA sessions are not presentations or lectures. They are live, facilitated conversations where members bring what’s real for them right now - questions, dilemmas, uncertainties - and explore them openly with an experienced practitioner.

About this AMA - Gestalt Coaching Uncovered 

Have you heard of Gestalt coaching but felt unsure about what it actually is or how it differs from other coaching approaches? Perhaps you have come across techniques such as the “empty chair” or working with projections and want to understand them more deeply.

In this 60-minute online AMA, Dina Sabry Fivaz invites AC members into an open conversation about Gestalt coaching as a relational and experiential approach. Drawing from Gestalt psychology, existentialism, phenomenology, bodywork, movement, creativity, and systems thinking, Gestalt coaching explores what is emerging in the present moment rather than relying on fixed techniques or predefined models.

This session is shaped entirely by participants’ questions and curiosity. Depending on the discussion and group interest, Dina may also offer a short live Gestalt coaching demonstration during the session.

Preparation

No preparation is required. Gestalt coaching is grounded in the here-and-now, and participants are invited to simply arrive as they are.

Those who wish to explore the topic in advance may watch Dina’s short introduction video to Gestalt coaching and consider any questions or areas of curiosity they would like to bring into the session.

Participants will also have the opportunity to submit questions in advance, although priority will be given to questions raised live during the session.

Christina is an Executive Coach and team coach assessor lead at the Association for Coaching, where she supports coaches in developing their skills and impact. With a background in senior leadership and coaching at Barclays Bank, she has worked with senior leaders across multiple industries, helping them navigate change, build high-performing teams, and lead with authenticity. She coaches globally across banking, finance, professional services, retail, education, and more, blending business insight with a calm yet challenging approach. Christina is passionate about fostering deep, insightful conversations.

This webinar provides a focused exploration of effective supervision and the role of reflective practice in enhancing coaching outcomes.
