How to use the T-GROW model for making personal changes

Posted By Mervin Nicholas Straughan, 04 February 2021

The T-GROW tool is well-established among life coaches for helping to bring about personal change. It's also used as a problem solver and for personal growth. Life coach Mervin Straughan explains how it's used. The Myles Downey T-GROW model builds on the one developed by Whitmore, Fine and Alexander known as GROW. It differs through the addition of the letter 'T' which stands for topic and, therefore, encourages the life coach client to identify a specific challenge to overcome. Both models take the client though a number of steps to problem solve or bring about change in their lives. The process involves setting goals, identifying obstacles and exploring the range of options before embarking on the next steps. It also incorporates a realistic appraisal of the current situation.
