What is Professional Indemnity Insurance and do I need it?

Professional indemnity insurance, often referred to as professional liability insurance or PI insurance, covers legal costs and expenses incurred in your defence, as well as any damages or costs that may be awarded, if you are alleged to have provided inadequate advice, services or designs that cause your client to lose money.

You are required to have an individual Professional Indemnity Insurance policy if you undertake any form of coaching on a private basis or on behalf of your organization.

If, however, you are an employee of an organisation and deliver coaching on their behalf it will be sufficient to supply the organization’s Professional Indemnity Insurance policy.

There may be certain exceptions in countries outside of the UK where this type of insurance is not available. If you wish to apply for accreditation this should be declared when applying.
