Interconnectedness and Sustainability
From the Zulu word Ubuntu, meaning our essence as humans is so interconnected that no-one can exist except in relationship with others. We are interconnected as humans and across cultures, posing questions for us to consider. While they cannot possibly address every ethical matter, the resources in this collection may guide us to think deliberately and deeply about how to conduct ourselves appropriately when working with supervisees and across different cultures. We are being made increasingly aware of the complexity of our relationships through challenges that we are no longer able to ignore, such as climate crisis and the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic. These, and many important issues that we and those we supervise come across, perhaps matters of health, lifestyle, manufacturing, supply chains, transport and so on, require our ethical attention. As these resources were being compiled, a more focused interest in climate-related coaching was part of the evolving picture. Organisations and interest groups that are inclusive across the coaching associations were being created, offering conversational spaces and resources. One example is the Climate Coaching Alliance which created a Global Statement from the Professional Bodies for Coaching, Mentoring and Supervision A range of resources was starting to be created and will be noted here as they come online. We intend that these resources will grow to become a sustainable source of useful materials through the involvement of all those who read, and then add to, the links. The authors plan to update the content as new resources are available and new conversations about ethics occur.
